General Requirements:
Mental Health Counselor III Master's degree in Counselor Education, Counseling, Psychology, Social Work, or a related mental health field; or Doctorate in Counselor Education. Licensed Professional Counselor Supervisor (LPC-S) or Licensed Clinical Social Worker Supervisor (LCSW-S) in the State of Texas. Minimum of five years full-time equivalent post-licensure experience, including at least one year providing clinical supervision in a college, university, or relevant clinical setting. Experience in a university or college counseling setting is preferred. Expertise in one or more specialty areas such as trauma, eating concerns, substance use, or neurodiversity preferred. Experience designing and delivering outreach or wellness programs preferred.Additional education may be considered in lieu of experience. Mental Health Counselor IV Master's degree in Counselor Education, Counseling, Psychology, Social Work, or a related mental health field. Doctoral degree in counseling, psychology, social work, or related discipline preferred. Licensed Professional Counselor Supervisor (LPC-S) or Licensed Clinical Social Worker Supervisor (LCSW-S) in the State of Texas. Minimum of seven years full-time post-licensure clinical experience, including at least two years providing supervision to licensed professionals. Experience in a university or college counseling center preferred. Proven success in leading complex initiatives, staff development, or clinical program innovation preferred. History of professional advocacy or leadership within the mental health field preferred.Additional education may be considered in lieu of experience.
Nature & Purpose of Position/Usual Duties:
Mental Health Counselor III Provides advanced clinical mental health services, supervision, and leadership within the Sam Houston State University Counseling Center. Offers direct counseling and crisis intervention services to students, clinical supervision to counseling staff and trainees, and consultation to the campus community. Supports a culture of student well-being, professional excellence, and continuous improvement through evidence-based practice, outreach, and collaboration.
Mental Health Counselor IV Provides senior-level clinical, supervisory, and administrative leadership within the Counseling Center. Delivers advanced mental health services to students, oversees complex clinical and operational initiatives, and contributes to the strategic direction and quality of counseling programs. This role combines high-level clinical practice with mentorship, program oversight, and professional leadership to advance the university's mission of student well-being and academic success.
Primary Responsibilities (Staff Positions Only):
Mental Health Counselor III Provides individual, couples, and group counseling for students presenting with a wide range of developmental, emotional, and psychological concerns. Conducts comprehensive risk assessments and crisis interventions, coordinating safety planning, follow-up, and after-hours on-call support as needed. Develops and implements evidence-based treatment plans and maintain accurate, timely documentation consistent with legal, ethical, and university standards. Provides case consultation and serves as a clinical resource to colleagues managing complex cases. Delivers clinical supervision and mentorship to Level II counselors, trainees, and interns. Leads or co-facilitates case conferences, peer consultation groups, or in-service trainings to enhance clinical practice and promote staff development. Contributes to quality assurance, policy development, and program evaluation efforts within the Counseling Center. Assists with onboarding and training new staff members and serve as acting lead in the absence of the Director or Associate Director. Collaborates with faculty, staff, and departments to promote student mental health and campus-wide wellness initiatives. Develops and delivers prevention-based outreach programming, workshops, and presentations to the university community. Represents the Counseling Center on university committees, task forces, and professional collaborations. Maintains compliance with state laws, ethical standards, and institutional policies governing clinical practice and supervision. Participates in ongoing professional development and continuing education to maintain licensure and best practice standards. Performs other related duties as assigned.
Mental Health Counselor IV
Provides advanced clinical services, including individual, couples, and group therapy for students with complex mental health needs. Serves as a senior clinical supervisor, overseeing supervision practices and ensuring adherence to state board and ethical standards. Leads the development, implementation, and evaluation of Counseling Center programs, policies, and clinical protocols. Represents Counseling Services in professional, university, and community settings, including committees, task forces, and conferences. Provides expert consultation to university leadership, faculty, and staff regarding student mental health, crisis response, and intervention strategies. Coordinates or oversees key functional areas such as training, outreach, clinical operations, or quality assurance. Participates in the development and execution of the Counseling Center's strategic plan and assist in budget and resource planning. Mentors emerging leaders and fosters a culture of clinical excellence and collaboration. Contributes to accreditation, assessment, and continuous improvement efforts. Provides consultation and case review for high-risk or complex situations, serving as a senior-level resource for the department. Engages in professional leadership activities beyond the university, including conference presentations, publications, and service in state or national professional organizations. Assists the Director with clinical quality review, policy development, and crisis response coordination. Maintains compliance with state laws, ethical standards, and university policies. Performs other related duties as assigned.
