Job Summary

The Counselor Education program at Purdue University Fort Wayne (PFW) invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position with a start date of July/August 2024. Applicants with professional training and experience in school counseling and/or college counseling and student affairs are strongly encouraged to apply. However, we are also considering candidates with a background in clinical mental health counseling. The successful candidate will teach in-person; supervise/advise students; maintain an active research agenda; and provide service to the university, community, and profession.

The Program

Our program offers Master’s specializations in School Counseling (K-12 Indiana licensure), Clinical Mental Health Counseling, as well as College Counseling and Student Affairs. Students are trained to work in school, university, and community settings utilizing a systemic-interpersonal process approach that emphasizes multiculturalism. We are a small group of dedicated faculty members committed to social justice, multi-tiered degrees of advocacy, and developing competent and compassionate counselors with strong interpersonal process skills. We maintain a collegial work environment based on mutual respect and shared responsibility for program success.

We seek to build a strong sense of community in our program, with students cultivating deep and long-lasting relationships through our 3-year cohort model. Courses are sequenced to scaffold student training, with three required skill/theory courses prior to practicum. For second-year practicum, our students provide free mental health counseling services to community-based clients through the faculty-led PFW Community Counseling Center. Students engage in at least two semesters of practicum under direct faculty observation and supervision prior to internship.

Additionally, our program is closely affiliated with the PFW Student Counseling Center, which provides counseling services to students on campus. Practicum students have the opportunity to provide individual or couples counseling to self-selected undergraduates on campus, whereas our internship students provide individual, couples, and group counseling depending upon their area of specialization. For school counseling internships, our program is closely networked with the four (4) major school districts in the Fort Wayne area, and any successful candidate with a specialization in School Counseling will have the opportunity to build upon this rich foundation.

Purdue University Fort Wayne is a thriving regional campus of Purdue University. Fort Wayne is the second-largest metropolitan area in Indiana, a rapidly growing community located two hours from Indianapolis and three hours from Chicago. Minimum Requirements

Earned doctorate in Counselor Education from a CACREP accredited program, or a related doctoral degree with full-time employment as a faculty member in a counselor education program for a minimum of one full academic year before July 1, 2013. Specialized training in School Counseling and/or Student Affairs is preferred, but candidates with alternative cognates or specializations (e.g., CMHC) will be considered. ABD candidates will also be considered with the expectation that a doctoral degree be awarded before the start of employment.

The selection committee is also interested in hearing about: specialized counselor training and/or experience; research interests; ability to obtain a school and/or clinical mental health counseling license in the state of Indiana (as applicable); and willingness to engage in community outreach.

Candidates may also choose to submit Evidence of Teaching and/or Research Effectiveness (e.g., course evaluations, copies of relevant publications/grant proposals, etc.), but this is not required. All candidates invited for a campus interview will be expected to do a 60-minute instructional student presentation as well as a 45-minute research presentation.
